American Kennel Club welcomes new official dog breed, the Biewer terrier

SAN FRANCISCO – The American Kennel Club welcomes a new breed of dog to the pack, and they are tiny.

It’s called the Biewer Terrier and was developed in Germany in the 1980s.

The club says the breed is a cheerful dog with a childish, even whimsical, attitude. They are intelligent, devoted, and faithful companions, despite their sometimes mischief.

It resembles a Yorkie with a long, flowing coat of various colors that hangs close to the ground. They weigh between 4 and 8 pounds.

It is now the American Kennel Club’s 197th recognized breed, meaning this toy dog breed can compete for Best in Show at many U.S. events including the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York.
