Britain’s ‘most hopeless guard dog’ is scared of water and other puppies

A pooch has been dubbed the UK’s most hopeless guard dog due to its fear of water and puppies.

Ruby the Cavapoo earned the embarrassing title after defeating over 100 other dogs in a competition to find the weakest mutt in the country.

The nervous puppy, five years old, looks like a real teddy bear and crouches behind its owner’s legs when she sees another puppy. And although Ruby lives by the sea, he’s also afraid of the water.

The “Most Hopeless Guard Dog” contest was run by the smart home security company Boundary’s and over 100 dogs were entered.

But the judges agreed that Ruby’s stupid fears, teddy bear look, and harmless demeanor made her a clear winner.

The scared dog lives with her owner Caroline Abbott in Torquay, Devon and is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a miniature poodle.

Owner Caroline takes pride in Ruby’s sweet nature

Although she doesn’t meet the criteria to become a therapy dog, her owner Caroline describes Ruby as unofficial.

The gentle pooch has even helped several local children overcome their fear of dogs because of his friendly and gentle manner.

Carline says Ruby is her best friend, but walks take forever because everyone wants to “make a fuss about her”.

The couple won a state-of-the-art border alarm system with a six-month subscription worth £ 350 in the competition. The system’s sensors are pet friendly, so won’t turn off when Ruby jumps at night.

Caroline said: “I’m so proud that Ruby was named ‘Britain’s Most Hopeless Watchdog’ because it’s another way of saying she’s the least scary, least intimidating and least aggressive dog you might meet can, and I have a dog for companionship, not security. “

Caroline also hopes the system will help keep Ruby safe amid a nationwide spike in dognappings.

“I’m very excited that Ruby has won us a Boundary home security system,” she added. “Your technology sounds very clever, and it will reassure me to know that my home is so safe, especially when I have to leave Ruby behind – nothing is more valuable to me than her. She is my best friend.”

Boundary CEO Robin Knox added, “We had great fun looking through all of the UK’s worst guard dog applications, but Ruby was unanimously voted the most hopeless of the group.

“We’re excited to be able to help Ruby and her owner with home security with one of our state-of-the-art systems.

“Ruby doesn’t even have to worry about setting off the alarm thanks to Boundary’s pet-friendly sensors.”
