(CNN) – Elmo’s newest mate will find her eternal home on Sesame Street.
The sesame workshop announced a new resident on Tuesday: Tango, Elmo’s adopted puppy.
Tango is officially featured in Furry Friends Forever: Elmo Gets a Puppy, a 30-minute special that debuts on August 5th on HBO Max. (HBO Max and CNN share parent company WarnerMedia.)
According to a press release from Sesame Workshop, Tango has been in development for two years and “will teach preschoolers how to meet a new animal, play and brush gently with a pet, teach new tricks, give baths, and most importantly, show love and affection”. for her furry friends. “
Tango’s debut could be considered timely as many families invited new pets during the pandemic – a trend that appears to be strong, according to PetPoint, which is collecting data from more than 1,100 animal organizations in the US
More than 32,000 dogs were adopted in May 2021, up 16.7% year over year, PetPoint found. But the number of dogs given to animal welfare organizations has also increased, with 15,420 so-called owner handovers in May 2021 – an increase of 23.9% compared to May 2020.
Meanwhile, Tango should stay.
Sesame Workshop said the puppy will be “a mainstay in future Sesame Street content,” and “enable consistent modeling of safe behavior and age-appropriate help with a pet,” according to a press release.
