Joanna Bishop, owner of Enlightened Pawz, might just be the right person to help out with your pets – from cats and dogs to chickens and turtles. Bishop was born in Los Alamos and her parents, Jenny and Alan Bishop, still live here.

Bishop has a diverse background. She graduated from Santa Fe Community College with a degree in architectural design and construction management. She was also once certified as a professional nanny. Now that she is pursuing her passion for training and retiring dogs, she became a CATCH Canine Trainers Academy certified dog trainer.

“I thought I knew a lot about dogs, but I learned so much from the academy. It was great to be certified by a reputable school with an extensive curriculum. I gained a deeper understanding of how dogs learn and how to communicate with them, ”said Bishop.

She is also “fear free” certified and certified CPR and first aid for pets.

Bishop believes that control is very important during training sessions. Outside of her house, she has had a special training area built with a high cedar fence all around and artificial turf on the surface. It works very well with their puppy training and basic obedience classes as the dogs are not distracted.

In addition to training, Bishop takes on dogs that can get along with their own dogs. She has many long-time customers who say their dogs are always happy when they are taken out of their care. Being around her own and strange dogs makes her very happy.

Bishop also sits like a cat; She goes to a customer’s home, clears the litter box, makes sure her cats have food and water, and when wanted, she hangs around and gives them a little love. If necessary, she also offers a claw clipping service.

Her website EnlightenedPawz.com lists all of the services she offers to other animals such as horses, rabbits, birds, chickens, geckos, turtles, and more.

Bishop has four dogs of his own; Marley, a German Shepherd-Beagle mix, Zadie, a Golden Retriever, Leilani, a Dachshund Chihuahua, and Reese, a 7 month old Labrador puppy. She also has two sons, Sawyer and Carter.
