Honkers get back to .500 with doubleheader sweep of Moon Puppies

Jason Swan delivered a two-out, walk-off single to give the Honkers a 5-4 win over the Minnesota Moon Puppies in Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheaders. Oh, and then he delivered two more hits and two more RBIs in the Nightcap, which the Honkers won 11-2.

Rochester is now 17-17 overall and they skipped Bismarck in the Great Plains West. The Honkers have won three in a row.

Game 1: Rochester 5, Minnesota Moon Puppies 4

JJ Cruz delivered a clutch RBI bunt and Mac Horvath took a step to knot the score at 4 in the fifth inning of the seven innings game. That set up Swan’s exploits at the end of the seventh inning. Swan finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Carson Stevens scored two runs and Otto Grimm, the University of Minnesota product, went 2-3 with two RBIs.

Brant Alazaus hit five in 3 1/3 innings but gave up four deserved runs. The Honkers trio Matthew Maldonado, Casey Trap and Patrick Williams combined 3 2/3 innings of scoreless balls. Williams won his second win of the season.

Game 2: Rochester 11, Minnesota Moon Puppies 2

Aaron Vernon scattered seven hits over his four innings, allowing only two runs with five strikeouts to help the Honkers earn the sweep. Swan went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The Honkers scored two runs in the first inning and seven in the second inning and drove to an easy win.

Ben North and Ben Rosengard both had two hits and an RBI. Jack Colette and Miguel Ortiz both scored two runs. Ortiz drove in two runs.

The Honkers will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Duluth to play against the Huskies. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Wade Stadium.
