Lockdown puppies hit by kennel cough surge | News

Veterinarians have reported an increase in dogs suffering from kennel cough as lockdown pups first start socializing.

Owners are urged to vaccinate pets against the highly contagious disease, which can cause a hacking, choking cough that can be distressing to dogs. In most cases, pets will need to be isolated to the end. Old dogs, very young puppies, or those with other health problems can have serious complications such as pneumonia.

Kennel cough is caused by a variety of bacteria and viruses and spreads quickly through contact while playing, sharing toys and bowls, and contaminated surfaces.
