Man held for mowing down 5 puppies in city

One person was arrested on Sunday at Lingaraj Police Station in the city for mowing five puppies and seriously injuring another in Gosareswar Square in the old town.

The defendant was identified as Prafulla Rout, a driver by profession. The arrest was based on a complaint filed on Saturday by members of the city-based NGO Seva Hin Sankalp at the Lingaraj police station.

Rout reportedly ran over his car on a puppy on June 3 and killed another four puppies and injured another the next day while the animals were eating food on the side of the road. “He mowed down one puppy in his car and ran another five puppies over the next day, four of whom died. Another puppy is being hospitalized and is now in critical condition,” said a member of the NGO.

He went on to claim that when he opposed Rout’s act, members of his NGO abused them and threatened dire consequences as well. On the other hand, Rout’s family members refuted the allegations, saying he mistakenly ran over the dogs.
