Aca-pawesome? ABC goes to the dogs with Rebel Wilson.
The Disney-backed broadcast network tapped the former Pitch Perfect star to host a dog grooming contest series called Pooch Perfect.
Lisa Vanderpump, the famous dog groomer Jorge Bendersky and the veterinarian Dr. Callie Harris will serve as the trio of judges for the eight-part series produced by Beyond Media Rights Limited. The series is based on the eponymous format that aired in Australia last year and was also hosted by Wilson. The series was originally created in the UK and produced by Beyond.
In each episode 10 dog hairdressers in the country and their assistants are shown taking part in challenges such as “Immunity Puppertunity” and the “Ultimutt”. (Yes, really.) ABC describes it like this: “In these challenges, the teams compete against each other in epic grooming-trans-fur-mations and present their incredible creations on the illustrious ‘dogwalk’.” The three best teams at the end of the Season will compete for a cash prize. (It’s unclear whether the puppies featured in the series will also receive treats for their participation.)
Wilson starred as “Fat Amy” in all three Pitch Perfect films. Pooch Perfect brings the actress back to ABC, where she starred in the 2013 comedy Super Fun Night. Here’s a clip from Wilson hosting the Australian version of the series.
Pooch Perfect arrives after HBO Max aired a similar dog grooming contest show, Haute Dog, last year. The deal for Pooch Perfect had been in the works for some time when former ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke bought the show before it was promoted to Disney studio 20th Television.
