Rottweiler is most popular dog breed in Detroit

Rottweilers took first place among the popular dog breeds of the American Kennel Club in Detroit for the first time, the non-profit organization announced on Tuesday.

“I am pleased that the Rottweiler takes the top spot in this city for once,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “Rottweilers are naturally playful, gentle, and affectionate with their families.”

She also noted, “You make a good watch dog too.”

For some, this is a nice way to acknowledge that the breed can be aggressive.

Some communities have banned it. Some studies show that the breed is responsible for the second highest number of fatal attacks on humans, followed by German Shepherds. Pit bulls had by far the most attacks.

Still, the negative reports have not harmed the breed’s popularity, which is gradually climbing the rankings. It was number 2 in Detroit for two years in a row. This year it finally made it to number 1, pushing the German Shepherd back to number 3.

Rounding out the top 5: The French Bulldog – the Frenchie – jumped from No. 7 to No. 2. The Golden Retriever was No. 4 and the Bulldog was No. 5.

The most popular dog nationwide was the Labrador Retriever, which has topped the list for 30 years. The French Bulldog was nationwide, as in Detroit, in 2nd place and has thrown the German Shepherd Dog back in 3rd place.

Rottweilers – Rotties – are muscular dogs that descended from the mastiffs of the Roman legions, according to the AKC. They have territorial instincts, which is why the association recommends early training and socialization.
