Scientists in Finland did research Aggression in dogs by breed. Of the 22 breeds included, one was selected as the most aggressive due to a large sample. The name of the study was: “Aggressive behavior in purebred dogs is influenced by demographic, environmental and behavioral factors”. The rough collie was the most aggressive breed.

“Aggressive” was defined in a spectrum ranging from “biting people and other pets”, which could have “medical or even fatal consequences for the victim”, to “more frequent growls and barks”. The researchers pointed out that aggressive behavior in some breeds has led to them being banned in certain countries. The study looked at over 9,270 dogs based on their reactions to humans. This was taken from a larger sample of data from 13,715 dogs. The data for the larger sample was collected online. Only purebred dogs were accepted.

From the sample, 1,791 dogs landed in the “highly aggressive behavior” group and 7,479 in the “low aggressive behavior” category. The mean age of the dogs was 4.6 years, ranging from two months to 17 years. More than half (53%) of the dogs were female.

Common characteristics of aggressive dogs, beyond the breed, included males and older dogs. The number of dogs in a family and height were other variables. Also: “The dog’s height has also been linked to aggressive behavior; small dogs were more likely than medium and large dogs to be aggressive, but there was no difference between medium and large dogs. ”Anxiety was also cited as a reason for aggressive behavior.

The most aggressive breeds after the Rough Collie were the Miniature Poodle (toy, miniature, and medium-sized) and the Miniature Schnauzer. The breeds with the least likelihood of aggressive behavior were Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Lapponian Shepherd.

We’ve considered the popularity of each breed, provided it’s available from the American Kennel Club (AKC). For the breeds that do not have a profile in the AKC database, we have added the rank for the closest breed with a note.
