Why is Oelwein Obsessed with This Dog Breed?

All dogs need a home, and during the COVID pandemic, many Americans adopted a new pooch because they believed a dog was a great companion at a very difficult time when it was difficult for many to get company would be.

With the increased interest in our four-legged BFFs, there is no greater chance of finding a breed in the state of Iowa than a Bulldog. They are our favorite breed, at least for research. The Honest Paw website published a list of the most Googled dog breeds by state, and Iowans Googled more bulldogs than any other breed. But why?

Bulldogs have a moment … everywhere

The American Kennel Club recently had a full story on the French Bulldog’s rising popularity, stating that the breed was the second most popular dog breed in the country. Now, is it possible that when Americans looked at Google search trends, they simply looked for the difference between a French and an English bulldog? God knows I did this search – oh and if you’re wondering, English bulldogs tend to be a bit taller. Maybe that’s part of it. But it doesn’t hurt that Bulldogs have been one of the most popular breeds in the U.S. and internationally for decades.

In much of Europe, they became popular during World War II when they were compared to Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who was a strong opposition to Nazi Germany. Why you should adopt an animal because it looks like a human is a bit of a mystery to me.

Other states are a gaga for bulldogs too

Iowa is in good company, with 10 other states also looking for bulldogs more than any other breed. The Havanese came in second place by a wide margin. They were the most searched breed in five states, while Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds were the most popular in a few states. Pit bulls didn’t make the list. This is Ruffff.
