The Las Vegas Aces made A’ja Wilson the # 1 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft.
The 24-year-old had an immediate impact on the franchise, becoming Rookie of the Year in 2018 and most recently receiving the 2020 WNBA MVP awards. The franchise also inspired Wilson.
For Whistle’s latest edition of “Meet the Pets,” Wilson wore a “Dog Mom” shirt her mother bought for her and introduced us to her Aussiepoo pups.
“When it came to naming them, especially Ace, I just walked away from the Aces,” explained the three-time all-star. “I’m of course very unique. The second two and the ace are a two. Ace and Deuce, that’s two peas in a pod.”
Although Wilson was “scared” of small dogs while at the University of South Carolina, he got a year-long ace before entering the WNBA bubble (the “Wubble”) last year. She wasn’t sure if she could “take the responsibility” of two dogs, but after unable to take Ace to the Wubble, she convinced herself to add nine-month-old Deuce to the family. “These were all very emotional decisions,” she said.
What Ace and Deuce would do best on the basketball court, Wilson estimates that Deuce “is too crazy to be a point guard” but “could do the job” as a shooting guard, while Ace “probably would be like me”.
There is a lot of talk about puppies – can there ever really be enough puppies? – but Wilson also spoke about her favorite WNBA players of all time, as well as the mission behind her foundation of the same name.
